Flower Show School

Flower Arranging

An Opportunity to Grow!

Flower Show Schools is not just intended for prospective flower show exhibitors and judges, but for all garden club members and all persons interested in flower design and horticulture.

While the primary purpose of these courses is to train those wishing to become flower show judges, many of us attend for information and educational enlightenment and we do not have to take the examinations!

There are two components of Flower Show School:

  1. Design Instruction:

Design instruction covers traditional floral arrangements through contemporary styles and even designs incorporating lights and motors. Many attendees are particularly interested in table setting designs showing coordination of floral centerpiece, linens and dishes. Vignettes, small segments of rooms, also give ideas on interior decorating.

  2. Horticulture Curriculum:
The horticulture curriculum consists of basic general information on proper gardening techniques from seed / plant selection to plant culture and control of problems. Information is also presented on cultural needs of specific perennials, annuals, trees and shrubs, as well as fruits, vegetables and nuts and how to grow superior container plants.”

PROHIBITION OF INVASIVE PLANT MATERIAL IN STANDARD FLOWER SHOWS

Following several years of research, at the January 26, 2009 Executive Board meeting of GCNJ, The Nature Conservancy Category I Invasive Plant List (NJ) was adopted as the Official Invasive Plant List of GCNJ. The Board also adopted a policy:

“…prohibiting the exhibiting of plants on the list in our Standard Flower Shows with the exception of their use in Educational Exhibits.”

This policy must be stated in the General Rules of the Flower Show Schedule (see page 25, IV, 7 in the Handbook for Flower Shows, revised 2017). Copies of the list may be obtained from the GCNJ Flower Show School Chairman and the GCNJ Judges’ Council Chairman as well as from our website.
